Route 66 Highway Marker

In this tutorial, we will practice our photoshop drawing skills by creating a Route 66 highway marker. This tutorial features some useful features in Photoshop, such as using the Custom Shape Tool to create the completed design.





Step-by-Step:

1. Open a new document in Photoshop that is big enough to create the route marker that you want to make.
2. Select the Custom Shape tool from the side toolbar.



3. Click the "sign 4" shape from the shape dropdown in the toolbar at the top.



4. Create a new layer. Name it "Shield".
5. Hold down the Shift key. Click and drag to draw your route marker on the canvas. The color of the marker is unimportant at this point.



6. Open the layer styles for the "Shield" layer.
7. Change the "Cover Overlay" properties to the following:



8. Change the "Stroke" properties to the following:



9. You should now have something similar to the following:



10. Create a new layer below the Shield layer.



11. Select the "Shield" layer and click CTRL + E to merge it with the new layer below it. This will permanently set the layer styles.
12. Open the layer styles for the layer.
13. Change the "Stroke" properties to the following:



14. Repeat step 10 by creating a new layer below the Shield layer again.
15. Repeat steps 11 by select the "Shield" layer again and click CTRL + E to merge it with the new layer below it so that you again permanently set the layer styles.
16. Open the layer styles for the layer.
17. Change the "Stroke" properties to the following:



18. You should now have the following:



19. Select the Line Tool. Hold down the Shift key and draw a straight line across the shield.



20. You should now have the following completed route marker shield:



21. Select the Type tool. Type out "Route" on the top half.



22. Type "US" just below the line. Then Type "66" for the marker number.



23. You should now have your Route 66 Highway Marker!
